Biosketch

Catherine Ley, PhD , is an expert on the epidemiology of infectious disease. She is presently a Principal at Caradon Consulting in San Carlos, CA, providing epidemiologic, biostatistical and study management expertise for studies and trials in the fields of global health, infectious disease and cancer, including design, management, analysis, report and manuscript preparation. Previously, Dr. Ley was a Senior Scientist / Epidemiologist at the Institute for OneWorld Health in San Francisco, CA. At OneWorld, she was clinical trial team leader for the pivotal phase 3 clinical trial of the company’s lead in collaboration with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the WHO’s division of Tropical Disease Research (TDR). She was also responsible for the design and implementation of the trial in Bihar, India and analysis of trial data. Dr. Ley supervised the program manager with a clinical operations team of four, and maintained close communication with the Indian investigators. Prior to her post at OneWorld Health, Catherine held a Postdoctoral Fellow position in the Division of Epidemiology, Department of Health Research and Policy, and Division of Infectious Diseases and Geographic Medicine, Department of Medicine at Stanford University , Stanford, CA. There she examined infectious causes of cancer and was clinical coordinator of a randomized double blinded clinical trial of the eradication of Helicobacter pylori and the progression of preneoplastic lesions in Chiapas, Mexico. She was also principal investigator for a study of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and cervical cancer screening in elder immigrant Hispanic women in San Mateo County. Also, in 1997 Dr. Ley had the opportunity to serve as a Consultant Epidemiologist to the Zimbabwe AIDS Prevention Project (ZAPP) in Harare, Zimbabwe. In collaboration with the National Institutes of Health, she performed quality assurance/control for a cohort study of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) prevention in factory workers in Harare, Zimbabwe -- a collaboration between Stanford University and the University of Zimbabwe, Harare. She also designed and implemented a study of HPV infection and HIV transmission in HIV-positive mothers. Her BS and MS are in Biological Sciences (Stanford University), and her PhD is in Epidemiology ( University of California, Berkeley). Dr. Ley also completed post-doctoral training in infectious disease medicine and epidemiology at Stanford University School of Medicine.
