Biosketch

Dr. Brooks holds a B.A. in economics from Michigan State University, an M.A. in economics from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and completed his Ph.D. in economics at the University of Michigan in 1993.  His research interests include investigating the impacts of market structure and provider access on medical treatment choice, obtaining unbiased estimates of the effects of treatments on outcomes from retrospective health care databases, and studying the welfare implications underlying provider and insurer bargaining.  Dr. Brooks is presently tackling the theoretical and empirical issues surrounding treatment effectiveness research in several clinical areas including breast cancer, prostate cancer, lung cancer, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, end-stage renal disease, and acute nursing care.  He has served as a consultant to several pharmaceutical companies and managed care organizations

Dr. Brooks currently is an Associate Professor of Clinical and Administrative Pharmacy in the College of Pharmacy at the University of Iowa.  He was a Service Fellow at the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality prior to coming to the University of Iowa in 1996.  Dr. Brooks also has been a research economist at Battelle Pacific Northwest Laboratories and an economist with Vector Research, Inc. and Data Resources, Inc.
