Biosketch
Thomas R. Miller, MBA, PhD is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management at the Texas A&M Health Science Center School of Rural Public Health where he teaches health care finance and accounting. His research interests include financial performance of health care organizations, evaluation of community benefits provided by tax-exempt hospitals, pricing and payment systems, and health care cost analysis. Recent research has included examining health services utilization through the statistical analysis of large secondary data sets (e.g., claims data), the assessment of hospital markets, Medicaid payment methodologies, and the impact of specialty hospitals. Between 1987 and 2002, he was a Vice President based in the Chicago office of Jennings Ryan & Kolb, a national management consulting firm specializing in health care organizations.
Mr. Miller worked on a wide range of consulting engagements including financial analysis of hospital operations, strategic and managed care planning, physician integration planning, mergers and affiliations, specialty program assessments, financial feasibility and capital planning, and the facilitation of leadership retreats. Prior to 1987, Mr. Miller was Director of Operations Analysis with Republic Health Corporation (now Tenet Healthcare Corporation) and held Manager positions with Amherst Associates Inc. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Florida State University and holds a Master in Business Administration from the William E. Simon Graduate School of Business Administration, University of Rochester. He received his doctorate in Health Services and Policy from the College of Public Health at the University of Iowa in 2007, with a concentration in Health Economics.
